Mike Guss首次於Microsoft工作是在2009年春季。在Microsoft接觸Mike的時候，提及公司正在為「新的流動產品」 (小編實在想不到如何翻譯原文的”Mobile product”) 尋找對排版和印刷有認識的設計師。Mike在開始設計之前，參考了很多公司的產品設計，例如Nike、Uniqlo、Monocle雜誌、甚至機場所用的圖像，總數達300多幅之多。而Mike首個正式的工作是於480 x 800像素的空間中，設計一款電郵軟件的介面。初時的設計受Monocle雜誌的影響很大，包括黑色的背景和白色的文字。
其後Mike為「新的流動產品」設計了Start screen、Hub和其它重要的元素，以至後來Mike與Microsoft的其他員工分享了一套統一的介面設計標準。在2009至2010的冬季的時候，Microsoft可說是一家集合了各產品 (例如Bing、Office和Xbox) 的公司，要把這些產品都融入到電話上並提供良好的使用體驗是非常有挑戰性的工作。另外，在Mike於Microsoft內部使用Poster四處推廣其設計理念的時候，初期曾帶來很差的反應，但慢慢的大家都認同Mike的概念。
2012年是Mike的設計理念發揚光大的時候，並為Microsoft指引其介面設計的方向。Mike於文末提醒讀者他的設計並不只是單單的不使用漸變色效果、有限制地使用色彩、無襯線體 (Sans-serif)、於介面中放置一堆方格等等，而是在設計產品時避免忘記其最終目的。
雖然Mike在文中並沒有透露他的設計理念到底是甚麼，不過小編從Start screen、Hub和480 x 800像素 (即Windows Phone 7.x統一使用的螢幕解像度) 等提示中，估計這就是前稱「Metro」的設計概念，而「新的流動產品」應該是率先套用「Metro」設計的Windows Phone了。
而這個曾被稱作「Metro」的設計概念近日傳來「只是代號而非正式名稱」、「可能改稱作Windows 8 style UI或Windows 8」等消息。就在各媒體都在猜測新名的時候，似乎Microsoft方面已在官方的MSDN Blog和各活動的資料中透露了答案: Modern UI。
在將舉行的Windows Azure、Bing Maps、Windows 8等活動中，Microsoft多次使用了Modern UI這個字眼，甚至有專為Modern UI而舉辦的講座。在MSDN上，亦有題為《Data Structures class using Windows 8 Modern UI design》的文章。
似乎Modern UI將會是「Metro」的正式名稱，小編覺得這比稱作「Windows 8 style UI」、「Windows 8」好。讀者們對這個「Modern UI」的命名有何看法呢?
